The Benton County Commission tabled plans to discuss the future of the county jail at its regular business meeting Tuesday.

The commission was scheduled to discuss creating a corrections department to run the jail, removing the 740-bed facility from the control of the sheriff.

The jail houses about 500 local and contract prisoners at any give time and represents about a quarter of all county expenditures.

It removed the item from its agenda without comment and did not indicate when or if it will be rescheduled.
