Drivers: Time to brush up on those school zone driving rules

The 2017-2018 school year gets started soon and local law enforcement agencies have you covered with a series of videos and Facebook posts reminding drivers about the rules of staying safe in school zones.

The Kennewick Police Department offers a refresher on why the speed limit in school zones is 20 miles per hour and how the new “rapid flash” beacons at crosswalks work and what’s expected of drivers. Check it out here.

The Richland Police Department reminds drivers why they need to give school buses more distance than other vehicles and offer a reminder that it’s illegal to pass a stopped school bus.

“Be alert, children often are unpredictable,” it notes.

The West Richland Police Department reminds drivers that there are new speed limits on Keene Road and notes that the city receives relatively little money from fines. “The purpose of speed limits and adjustments is safety, not money,” it cautions.

Aug. 29 is the first day of school in Kennewick, Pasco, Richland, Prosser and Finley. Aug. 30 is the first day of school for Burbank’s Columbia School District. North Franklin Schools have a staggered start on Aug. 28 and 29.
