Sylvia Thomas feeds a piece of wedding cake to her husband, Vernon, during a surprise wedding cake presentation Monday at her 87th birthday party. The couple never shared a wedding cake because he left to serve in the U.S. Army in Korea soon after they eloped in January of 1949. The Richland man, who turns 90 in October, recently organized the “wedding reception” birthday party with help from his family. Many family members from their eight children attended the gathering at Avalon Health and Rehabilitation Center in Pasco.
