Kennewick, Umatillas dedicate Clover Island’s new ‘Gathering Place’
The Port of Kennewick and the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation will celebrate the completion of updates to Clover Island with a dedication of a new gathering spot that honors its history as a gathering place.
The event begins at 10:30 a.m. Friday on Clover Island and celebrates joint efforts by the port and tribes to install artwork on the island and improve the shoreline.
Improvements include a pathway along the marina harbor, a seating area, two bronze sculptures at a small pond by the marina, and The Gathering Place, called Wiyákuktpa.
Wiyákuktpa is designed to share tribal history, culture and tradition of gathering tule reeds in the area now known as Clover Island.
With the new additions in place, the port will have commercial parcels available on the island for mixed-use development.
