Just 16 votes separate Bob Koch, left, and Rodney “Rocky” Mullen as the race for Franklin County Commissioner appears headed for an automatic recount.

With just 16 votes separating two candidates for a seat on the Franklin County Commission, the race between incumbent Bob Koch and challenger Rodney “Rocky” Mullen is likely headed to an automatic recount.

Koch, who is seeking a fourth term, is leading Mullen with 9,987 votes to 9,971, or 50.04 percent to 49.96 percent. There are about 100 ballots left to count, as well as those ballots that were postmarked by election day but are still trickling in by mail.

The results will be updated on Nov. 28 and certified the following day.

Washington law requires a recount when the difference is less than one half of 1 percent of the votes counted.
