Trump calls golf broadcast to encourage sports’ return, says he’s bored with replays
The live broadcast of a golf tournament got a surprise Sunday when President Donald Trump called in unexpectedly to talk sports, according to CNBC News.
The president called in during the NBC Sports broadcast of the TaylorMade Driving Relief tournament in Florida, which was raising money for coronavirus relief, CNBC reports.
Speaking to NBC’s Mike Tirico, Trump said, “I’m getting a little tired of watching 10-year-old golf tournaments where you know who won,” according to the outlet.
“We really want to see it get back to normal,” Trump said, according to Yahoo News.
The tournament was the first live televised golf event in two months. The PGA rules for the tournament included social distancing, health screenings and no spectators.
“So when you have all of those thousands, tens of thousands of people going to majors and going to golf tournaments, we want them to have that same experience. We don’t want them having to wear masks and be doing what we’ve been doing for the last number of months. That’s not getting back to normal,” the president told Tirico, Yahoo reports.
“We want to be back to normal where you have the big crowds and they’re practically standing on top of each other and they’re enjoying themselves. Not where they’re worried. But in the meantime, they do the social distancing,” he said, according to Golf Magazine.
“I love golf, I love even the exercise,” Trump said, Golf reports. “Sometimes it’s not as much when you are running around in carts for speed, but it’s a great game. And it’s really so good to see these great players playing, and I know them, and they are really terrific people.”
Trump has not been out to play golf in more than two months during the coronavirus pandemic, last playing at one of his Florida clubs in early March, The Hill reports.
