ALDI recalls kimbap sold in 19 states over potential fish allergen

A recall has been issued for a kimchi and tofu kimbap product sold at ALDI stores in 19 states and Washington, DC, after it was discovered that the food may contain undeclared tuna, posing a serious risk to anyone who's allergic.

This is just one of several recalls to hit ALDI products in recent months, including more than 500,000 boxes of mac and cheese.

If you or someone you know is allergic to tuna, here's what you should know about the latest incident.

Fusia Asian Inspirations Kimchi & Tofu Kimbap recalled

New Jersey-based Gellert Global Group announced July 2 that it is recalling its 8.1 oz packages of ALDI Brand Fusia Asian Inspirations Kimchi & Tofu Kimbap, citing a potential contamination from undeclared tuna.

According to the recall notice, "People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to fish run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products."

The packages, marked with a best if used by date of Oct. 8, 2027, were distributed to select ALDI locations across 19 states and one territory, including:

  • Connecticut
  • Washington DC
  • Delaware
  • Louisiana
  • Maryland
  • Maine
  • Massachusetts
  • North Carolina
  • New Hampshire
  • New York
  • Ohio
  • Oklahoma
  • Pennsylvania
  • Rhode Island
  • South Carolina
  • Tennessee
  • Texas
  • Virginia
  • Vermont
  • West Virginia

How was the issue identified?

Gellert Global Group said it learned about the mistake after a customer pointed out that the product, which contains fish, came in packaging that said nothing about the presence of fish.

The company said it launched an investigation, which revealed a "temporary breakdown" in its "production and packaging procedures that has subsequently been corrected."

Gellert Global Group said there have been no reported illnesses connected to the mistake.

Refunds, questions, and concerns

Customers who bought the 8.1 oz packages of ALDI Brand Fusia Asian Inspirations Kimchi & Tofu Kimbap can return it to their point-of-purchase for a full refund.
