GM issues recall for ACDelco brake fluid

If you've ever felt like pressing on your brake pedal seemed a lot like stepping on a giant sponge, chances are your vehicle needed some brake and clutch fluid. And if you've recently needed brake fluid and purchased ACDelco brand, this product recall is for you.

On Thursday, May 7, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration confirmed that General Motors is recalling 40,440 containers of the hydraulic fluid that transfers pressure from the brake pedal to the brake pads.

The recall was filed on April 23 and covers a single bottling plant that produced the product between Oct. 19 and Dec. 28, 2022.

Brake and clutch fluid lubricates the moving parts that allow those mechanisms to function by converting the pressure applied to them into force, and it prevents internal corrosion. Experts say you should replace your brake fluid every two years to avoid systemic failure.

But NHTSA officials say if you used this batch of brake fluid, there are safety risks.

Which GM brake fluid product is the NHTSA recalling?

The NHTSA and General Motors say more than 40,000 containers of ACDelco GMW DOT 3 brake and clutch fluid are under scrutiny after GM officially filed the recall on April 23, 2026.

The recall covers a single bottling lot number (01977 09122) and is due to visible sediment in the fluid that causes it to fail Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 116.

Apparently, precipitation from two additives within the fluid itself, not external contamination, is causing the visible sediment. The sediment could compromise brake performance under certain conditions, according to the recall.

There will be reimbursement paid to dealers and ACDelco direct purchasers for any remaining stock, though no customer advisory has been issued.

The brake fluid is supplied by DuPont Specialty Products in Midland, Michigan, according to The Brake Report. Chemical analysis by GM's supplier confirmed that the visible sediment is present during manufacturing or bottling, but is normally filtered out. It isn't known why this batch is different.

What happens next in the GM brake fluid recall?

The NHTSA recall is a reimbursement-only recall, which, while uncommon among NHTSA recalls, is the "appropriate response for a single-lot equipment-only campaign of this kind," according to TBR, which says "the remedy is reimbursement, not replacement."

Dealer notifications began on May 6, and notifications to ACDelco's other direct purchasers are estimated for June 8. Owners with questions about the recall can call GM customer service at 1-866-467-9700 and reference recall number N262552830.

This is the second time in recent years GM has had an issue with brake lines and brake fluids, but back in late 2024, the issue was with the company's vehicles. In 2024, GM recalled more than 449,000 trucks and SUVs due to an inoperative brake fluid warning light.

In that recall, a software issue prevented the brake fluid warning light from turning on in some 2023 and 2024 model year Chevy, GMC, and Cadillac vehicles.
