Lucid Air vs. Mercedes EQS: Range vs. Comfort Showdown
Posh Efficiency for a Price
Luxury EV buyers no longer have to choose between innovation and refinement. Lucid and Mercedes are at the front of the pack in terms of luxury EV sedans. The Lucid Air and the Mercedes-Benz EQS both bring a ton to the EV table, and they're slick, efficient, opulent, roomy, and tech-forward. They both strive to define what a luxury electric sedan can be, albeit in slightly different ways. The Lucid Air has cemented itself in the luxury EV landscape, while the EQS sedan has struggled. Mercedes plans to phase it out at the end of it's lifecycle, but it still warrants a serious look based on everything it offers.
The upstart American Lucid Air focuses on record-breaking range and performance. Its base price is $70,900 for the Pure trim level. It's price range is wider than the EQS, topping out at $249,000 for the Lucid Air Sapphire. The EQS elevates comfort, technology, and the traditional strengths of a proven luxury German brand. The EQS 450+ starts quite a bit higher at $99,000, even though Mercedes lowered the price. So which one comes out on top? It depends on what matters more to you. We take a closer look at each one of them, particularly when it comes to comfort and range.
Exterior and Interior Styling
The Lucid Air takes a clean, almost minimalist approach to design. Its long, low silhouette is shaped for aerodynamic efficiency, and its restrained body sculpting results in a cohesive look that's both fresh and head-turning. Subtle details like the full-width lighting elements, flush door handles, and the floating glass canopy roof give it real street presence. While the slippery shape isn't uncommon in the EV world, the styling elements and contours make it genuinely attractive.
Inside, Lucid focuses on openness and simplicity. It's true to the "Air" name with ample light pouring in through the roof, wide lounge-like seats, and an expansive dashboard that all give the cabin a premium look. The cabin feels open and light, with high-quality materials and a floating digital display that doesn't overwhelm the space. It's modern, but properly restrained. There are fine touches like matte open pore wood, high-grade Nappa leather or PurLuxe, a sustainable bio-PVC leather alternative, and even alpaca wool/recycled polyester blends.
The Mercedes EQS keeps its sleek, albeit somewhat boring shape, for 2026 but gets a faux grille that looks more like the real deal, helping it cement its S-Class-like front fascia. Its exterior is defined by a rounded, almost teardrop shape designed to reduce drag, though it sacrifices some traditional sedan proportions in the process. There's virtually no body sculpting, instead relying on a curved beltline that runs from tip to tail.
Step inside, and the EQS looks anything but bland, providing quilted premium leather, wood, aluminum, and one of the biggest screens the automotive industry has ever seen. The optional Hyperscreen-a massive glass panel stretching across the dashboard-dominates the cabin. Ambient lighting, intricate trim options, and plush materials make it look unmistakably rich and stylish. The optional yoke steering wheel adds to the futuristic appearance, although it could take some getting used to.
The back of the EQS is like a high-end limo, boasting 40.4 inches of legroom and amenities like available 11.6-inch entertainment displays, a removable 7-inch MBUX tablet in the armrest, heated and ventilated power-adjustable seats, and four-zone climate control. Opting for the Executive Rear Seat Package adds massage functions and supportive neck pillows. It's a more luxurious experience than even the quarter-million dollar Lucid Air Sapphire.
The Lucid Air is no slouch. Thanks to its efficient packaging, it offers impressive interior space, including a large frunk and a spacious rear cabin with 38 inches of legroom. Whiel it's not as roomy as the EQS, it is more generous than most sedans of this size. Its ride quality leans slightly firmer, and while it's comfortable, it doesn't quite match the plushness of the Mercedes.

Infotainment and Technology
The Lucid Air Glass Cockpit uses a dual-screen setup with a retractable lower display. The interface is clean and responsive. The Glass Cockpit features a 34-inch, 5K-resolution curved display that's split into three zones for lighting and wiper controls, driving information, and infotainment. It's paired with a retractable lower "Pilot Panel" for additional vehicle settings, while the interface allows navigation and media to shift seamlessly between screens. It's more user-friendly than the setup in the EQS.
Mercedes counters with the positively stunning and enormous MBUX system, which is one of the most advanced infotainment platforms available today. The optional Hyperscreen is a sweeping 56-inch curved display that stretches nearly the full width of the dashboard, running from one door to the other. Beneath a single pane of advanced glass, it integrates three individual OLED screens into one continuous, seamless interface for both driver and passenger. It lacks the intuitiveness of the Lucid screen and takes some time to get used to, but the Lucid setup isn't as visually dramatic.
Range and Charging
This is where the Lucid Air establishes a clear advantage. Depending on the trim, it can deliver over 500 miles of range on a single charge, making it one of the longest-range EVs available today. Even the base Pure reaches roughly 420 miles. That kind of capability reduces range anxiety to near zero and makes long-distance travel significantly easier.
When it comes to charging speeds, the Lucid Air is among the quickest-charging EVs on the market, able to add about 300 miles of range in about 20–22 minutes when connected to a 350 kW DC fast charger. A typical 10–80% session takes around 24–35 minutes, depending on the trim level.
The Mercedes EQS also offers strong range, now offering a 425-mile range, thanks to a new 800-volt architecture, updated battery-cell chemistry, and a two-speed transmission. While that's more than enough for most drivers, it doesn't quite match Lucid's benchmark-setting numbers. Both vehicles support fast charging, but Lucid's efficiency means you get more miles per charge, which can make a meaningful difference over time.
The 2027 Mercedes-Benz EQS is quicker to charge than before, featuring a new 800-volt architecture, enabling it to charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 20-25 minutes, with up to 200 miles of range added in just 10 minutes when using a DC fast charger.
Final thoughts
If you value cutting-edge efficiency, long-range capability, and a more engaging driving experience, the Lucid Air is the better choice. It feels like a glimpse into the future of EV performance and engineering.
If your focus is on comfort, luxury, and a tech-forward cabin that delivers a traditional flagship experience, the EQS remains unmatched. It's the EV that most closely mirrors what buyers expect from a high-end luxury sedan, despite the fact that its exterior appearance is less dramatic and less attractive than the head-turning Lucid.
