Gas Is Expensive, and EVs Aren't: The Best Used EVs On Sale Right Now

Gas isn't cheap right now. The national average continues to hover around $4.00 per gallon, with some states seeing prices as high as $7.00. It's a bad time to have to own a car, but EVs present a tantalizing alternative. The list of EVs on the used market has been a short one for some time, but automakers' investments in EVs have recently led to a handful of newer models entering the used ranks. Here, we've listed our favorites, in no particular order, and included a ballpark pricing figure intended to represent about how much you'll pay for each on the used market before any incentives.

The Best Used EV On Sale: Hyundai Ioniq 5

Ballpark price: $25,000-$35,000

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is the best used EV for most people. Frankly, the best thing about the Ioniq 6 is that it doesn't throw its EV-ness in your face. It's just a car. It has buttons for stuff. It has a normal infotainment system and a few trim levels to choose from. The Ioniq 5 is basic, straightforward, and a downright bargain. It'll charge quickly, and most trims offer more than 250 miles of range, as well as all-wheel drive.

The Other Best Used EV: Chevrolet Bolt

Ballpark price: $13,000- $22,000

Speaking of an EV that doesn't show off, the Bolt is an incredible alternative that Ioniq 5 buyers should be looking at. They're a good bit smaller, even in the case of the SUV-ish Bolt EUV. The downside of these older Bolts is their range, with most topping out around 260 miles. This is more than enough for the daily commute, but not if you've got a particularly long one or spend a lot of free time on road trips. Try to find a later model, which comes equipped with DC fast charging, to maximize the Bolt's best attributes.

Tesla Model 3

Ballpark price: $20,000-$30,000

Like the Ioniq 5, the Tesla Model 3 is the obvious choice for many. It offers great range (up to 350 miles), excellent pricing, and a straightforward interior with plenty of space. Tesla also offers all-wheel drive models, which come at a premium, as do longer-range versions with larger batteries. That said, there's almost no drawback to the Model 3, especially given just how easy charging is thanks to Tesla's proprietary Supercharger network.

Kia EV9: The Best Used Electric SUV

Ballpark price: $50,000-$60,000

The Kia EV9 is a used EV, if only just. Having only debuted a few years ago, the used market is already ripe with EV9s. If you like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 but need something larger for, say, a family, the EV9 is a no-brainer. It offers a simple interior with plenty of standard features, tons of space, and some strong range. Most models will come with between 230 and 304 miles of range, with all-wheel drive versions offering slightly less than the SUV's maximum 304 miles.

Ford Mustang Mach-E

Ballpark price: $25,000-$30,000

The Mustang Mach-E is the EV you buy if you don't want an Ioniq 5. Offering a similar crossover shape, Ford's electrified crossover is also a bit more sporty than the Hyundai, and some upper trims pack some serious horsepower. The range figures are roughly on par with the Hyundai, landing somewhere between 211 and 320 miles depending on trim. Again, all-wheel drive is on offer, but rear-drive models will bring the most range.

Kia EV6

Ballpark price: $26,000-$35,000

The Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5 are extremely similar. Under the hood, they're just about identical. However, the EV6 is a more stylish alternative to the boxy Ioniq 5. Like the 5, the EV6 offers around 310 miles of range at its maximum. Kia managed to get the performance-focused EV6 GT out ahead of the Ioniq 5 N, and used examples are a great way into a seriously fast performance EV.

Tesla Model Y

Ballpark price: $26,000-$31,000

Essentially a crossover Model 3, the Tesla Model Y is one of the brand's best-sellers. On the used market, they're easy to find and easy to love for much the same reasons as the sedan version. A cheap, practical EV with access to the best charging network in the country is tough to pass up. Expect range to fall somewhere between 260 and 337 miles, depending on trim and whether your prospective Tesla has all-wheel drive.

Hyundai Ioniq 6

Ballpark price: $21,00-$34,000

The Ioniq 6 is another Ioniq 5 reskin. Underneath, it's practically identical to the Ioniq 5 SUV and Kia EV6 crossover. The same group of positives applies here, then. That means attractive styling and a simple interior, as well as some strong range figures. Offering between 270 and 303 miles on a charge, there's also enough juice to get you around.

The Best Used Off-Road EV: Rivian R1T

Ballpark price: $53,000-$60,000

The Rivian R1T (and SUV-shaped R1S) represents a niche that isn't often filled in the EV segment: an off-road-focused luxury model. Unlike so many other EVs, these have held their value remarkably well, thanks in large part to their innovative all-wheel drive systems, strong range (255-410 miles), and killer looks. We're also big fans of Rivian's many color options, something plenty of other automakers overlook.

The Best Used Luxury EV: Lucid Air

Ballpark price: $55,000-$65,000

If you don't want to have to worry about range (or being uncomfortable), the Lucid Air is for you. Offering between 384 and 520 miles of range, the most luxurious EV on this list is also the one with the longest legs. The Air is stunning to look at, offers serious luxury, and is plenty of fun to drive. We'd take it over a Mercedes EQS every day.
