PNNL scientists recognized in annual awards

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland has honored researchers who have made significant contributions to science in the last year.

▪  Patrick El-Khoury, Nathan Hodas and Ben Kravitz received the Ronald L. Brodzinski Early Career Exceptional Achievement Award, which honors Brodzinski’s passion for mentoring early career staff.

El-Khoury’s work has allowed imaging various aspects of plasmon-enhanced local electric fields on the nanometer length scale and development of a new nanoscope for in situ chemical imaging of live biological specimens.

Hodas was recognized for his accomplishments in fostering new computational science capabilities at PNNL and groundbreaking work in modeling human behavior. Kravitz has conducted research on modeling climate response to geoengineering concepts.

Chongmin Wang

▪  Morris Bullock and Chongmin Wang received the Exceptional Scientific Achievement Award.

Morris was recognized for his pioneering role in understanding and controlling molecular hydrogen activation in bioinspired catalysts, and development of multifunctional catalysts without use of precious metals.

Chongmin was recognized for pioneering development of in situ transmission electron microscopy tools for studying advanced batteries, leading to a new field of study.

▪  Timothy Johnson was honored for his achievements in geophysical imaging that have improved the timeliness and cost-effectiveness of subsurface contaminant remediation.

Doug McMakin
Doug McMakin

▪  Steven Ghan and Doug McMakin received awards for Individual Lifetime Achievement in Science & Technology Award.

Ghan has made internationally recognized contributions to climate science that have transformed the ability to simulate processes in the Earth’s climate.

McMakin is a world-renowned expert in millimeter-wave and holographic research, leading to commercialization that has improved national and international security.

▪  The VOLTTRON team received the Award for Exceptional Team Achievement in Science & Technology. They created software for distributed control and sensing related to the power grid and building operations.
