Wine facility with 4.5M gallons went up in flames in Eastern WA
A wine production facility near Mattawa went up in flames with 4.5 million gallons of wine inside.
Fire departments from across Grant County responded to the blaze at the Central Washington Wine Production Group and UpWest Wine Tasting on Tuesday afternoon, according to a social media post from the Grant County Sheriff’s Office.
The facility is on the 22000 block of State Route 243 South near Mattawa.
The company specializes in bulk wine solutions made from grapes in vineyards across the Columbia Valley AVA and the UpWest wine label, according to their website.
There were no injuries, according to the sheriff’s office.
The fire was discovered about 2:30 p.m. when a passerby saw the smoke and alerted Fire District 8, which has a station just down the road, public information officer Kyle Foreman told the Tri-City Herald.
Employees inside safely evacuated. The fire was under control by 5 p.m., and a fire marshal was expected to investigate the cause.
Foreman said that while the pressurized stainless steel wine production equipment presented a safety hazard, firefighters were able to safely extinguish the fire.
