The cruise embarkation process tends to vary slightly by cruise line and departure port, but generally, cruise lines require you to arrive within a certain time window to check in at the cruise terminal and board the ship. When sailing with some cruise lines, you may have the option to arrive anytime within a two- or three-hour period, while others assign you a narrower arrival time slot.

Some cruise lines and ports are stricter about arrival times than others. At a busy port, you may be turned away for arriving earlier than your assigned time, while other ports may allow you to board early if there isn't a long line to check in at the cruise terminal.

But as cruise demand continues to rise and ships get bigger, streamlining the embarkation process is key for a smooth start to passengers' vacations and to ensure that ships depart on time.

To better manage the flow of passengers through cruise terminals on embarkation day, Princess Cruises is gradually rolling out an updated cruise arrival process at a number of its home ports this year.

Princess Cruises introduces arrival groups for more organized embarkation

Princess Cruises has designed new arrival groups for cruise embarkation to create a more efficient boarding process for its sailings. Rolling out for cruises from select U.S. departure ports this May, arrival groups are staggered check-in windows at the terminal throughout the day designed to reduce congestion so passengers can start their cruise without delays.

Passengers booked on eligible sailings will be able to select their arrival group in the Princess Cruises app starting 30 days before their cruise. If you don't select an arrival group, Princess will automatically assign one for you 24 hours before embarkation.

Arriving to the terminal within your arrival group time window will ensure a faster check-in experience. If you arrive earlier or later than your designated arrival time, you may have to wait as those arriving during their arrival group time slot will be prioritized.

In addition to helping to ensure shorter lines, staggered arrivals will give crew members more time to ensure that every passenger is greeted as they come aboard.

Princess sailings from Seattle and Florida to begin using arrival groups

Princess Cruises is rolling out arrival groups gradually throughout 2026 at a number of ports. As the Alaska cruise season begins, Princess will use arrival groups for cruises from Seattle beginning May 3.

Later in May, Princess will implement arrival groups for sailings from Florida beginning May 23 at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, and May 24 at Port Canaveral.

Over the summer, Princess will introduce arrival groups for cruises departing from Vancouver, British Columbia; San Francisco, Calif.; Southampton, England; Barcelona, Spain; Copenhagen, Denmark; Rome (Civitavecchia), Italy; and Athens, Greece. Additional ports will implement arrival groups in the fall.

If your Princess sailing is using arrival groups for embarkation, you can expect to receive an email prior to your cruise with instructions for selecting your arrival time using the Princess app.

If you complete your OceanReady Travel Checklist early with your travel details, Princess will automatically assign you an arrival group that aligns with your travel plans just before selection opens, starting 30 days prior to embarkation. Even if you're assigned an arrival group, you can still update your time in the app once selection is open, as long as space is available in your desired time slot.
