Follow the Bible’s ‘road signs’ to stay on course

It felt so right, so comfortable driving down the road on a sunny warm spring morning heading back home several miles away. Driving along, I suddenly realized that my surroundings didn't look familiar.

A sense of urgency rose up within me. Where was I going? Where did I turn wrong to cause this situation? What road signs did I miss?

The urgency turned into desperation, and then the question of where can I turn around and get back going in the right direction. I was lost and desperately wanted to get back on the right road to home.

Have you ever been in this situation—traveling on the wrong road, going the wrong way, totally lost?

Safely at home, I found myself thinking about how I had messed up traveling that road. I sized it up and compared it to what my life once was before I met my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Before I met the Lord, I was driving my life mindlessly in all the wrong directions. The road signs in my life read: me, me, me. An unfulfilled, empty soul that I was; lost in the maze of this life!

Jesus states in John 14:6, “I am The Way and The Truth and The Life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” The way, the truth, the life are God’s road signs for us to follow while traveling on this earth’s roads.

First, Jesus is declaring that he is The Way — a path, a road to follow. Following his road sign, He guides and directs us in all, not some, areas of our lives.

The second road sign is The Truth. Jesus declares that he is The Truth, the source of all truth. In John 1:17 … grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. Without Jesus, there would be no right or wrong, nor truth. Jesus and truth are eternal, perfect, unchanging. Jesus is our example of truth.

The last road sign is The Life. Jesus declares that he is The Life. He said, “I am come that (men) may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” (John 3:15) Abundant life means living a life of happiness, peace, and joy in and with God. These are gifts found only in God — nowhere else.

So following Jesus on the right road means driving on his road in this life, following his road signs, and believing that he is The Way, The Truth, and The Life. Jesus’ road signs lead to an eternal life. When we lose our way in life, Jesus is there to pick us up and put us on the right road. He said that “he will never fail us nor abandon us.” (Deuteronomy 31:6)

The psalmist David prayed in Psalms 16:1, “You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of your presence, and the pleasures of living with you forever.”

Yes, it is God’s desire for you to follow his road signs through this life. There is no better way than his way. The choice is yours.
