God can still the storms of fear in this pandemic
Great fear has formed in the public consciousness about COVID-19 over past months. Many people have felt helpless to protect themselves, unsure about what to expect next, and afraid to circulate in public places.
After listening to a friend voice terror over possible exposure to the virus, my heart yearned to help her find some poise and feeling of dominion over the pandemic. I prayed for thoughts and words to share that would bring calm.
As I reminded her that there was a higher power at work around her than the Coronavirus and that she could listen for the voice of wisdom within to guide her and protect her from harm, she calmed down. She found peace and has been fine since, remaining in good health.
There is something we all can do to help conquer this pandemic that goes beyond social distancing and washing our hands. We can spread peace rather than fear and contribute to an atmosphere of thought that is marked by dominion and healing insight, rather than panic and fright.
In striving to find peace amidst the Coronavirus threat, I’ve found inspiration in studying the story of Jesus Christ facing a raging storm.
Jesus was in a small boat with some of his followers, when violent weather overtook them at sea. The disciples were terrified and feared for their lives, while Jesus was asleep on a pillow in the boat. They woke him and cried, “Do you not care if we perish?” Rather than reacting with fear, the Bible states that Jesus, “… rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, ‘Peace, Be still!’ And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm” (Mark 4:37-42 RSV).
Jesus knew a mightier power than the storm. His understanding of the omnipotence and omnipresence of God gave him spiritual power over the raging sea to stop the turbulence and restore peace.
We can rely upon the same omnipotence and omnipresence of God to still the storms of fear circulating in the public thought about the pandemic. We are not helpless. God is an all-knowing mind at work throughout all consciousness giving humanity the ideas and insight it needs to conquer this plague, and bring healing to people far and wide.
This pandemic is not the first mass evil humanity has faced, and it will not be the last. But it will not have the final say. It will be mastered. Solutions will appear as thought stays calm and ready to hear answers that bring good results.
We can each contribute to a healing atmosphere of thought with our prayers and remembering that there is a higher power at work around the globe than any virus. We do not have to cower or resign to despair.
We can rise in the strength of truth to resist this evil and conquer it. We can choose to spread peace, rather than fear.
