Opening Lead: Five of hearts
Declarer studied his hand and the dummy for several minutes and then spread his cards on the table and claimed twelve tricks. Cover the east and west cards and see if you can see why he thought he could take 12 tricks.
The Bidding: South opened 1H and North jumped to 3H. A cue-bidding sequence took them to a small slam in hearts.
The Play: South’s claim was as follows: “I pull trump, discard a spade on the third good diamond and then play the ace and a small spade. Whoever wins the spade will have to give me a sluff and a ruff or lead a club and present me with a third club trick.”
What Happened? One pair was in 6NT and received the top score. They had to find the queen of clubs and they did. I would vote for the sure thing as this pair did.
Bridge Futures: The Richland Duplicate Bridge Club (RDBC) has a game at the Richland Community Center (RCC) at 5:30 p.m. every Monday except holidays. RDBC also plays on the first, third and fifth Friday at 12:30 p.m. at the RCC in the lounge. Call Tom Edwards at 946-1824 for details.
