Opening Lead: King of clubs
The winners of the September Unit Game were Terry Liu and Shakir Zaman. They played this board against the runner-up pair, Joe Kraus and Hassan Mojtahedi. All the marbles were riding on the result!
The Bidding: Shakir thought that his east cards were worth a jump to 3D. Terry re-evaluated his seven points and bid 4NT asking for key cards (the four aces and the king of trump). The reply of 3D showed three key cards and 5NT meant that the partnership held all the key cards and asked for kings. 6D showed one king outside the trump suit and ended the auction.
The Play: The king of clubs lead was won by Shakir. He pulled trump in two rounds, trumped out the king of hearts and claimed 12 tricks (five hearts, five diamonds, one club and one spade).
What happened: Terry and Shakir got six matchpoints from the 2 nd place pair and won the contest with a margin of only 0.62! This was truly the swing board.
Bridge Futures: The Richland Duplicate Bridge Club (RDBC) has a game at the Richland Community Center (RCC) at 5:30 p.m. every Monday except holidays. RDBC also plays on the first, third and fifth Friday at 12:30 p.m. at the RCC in the lounge. Call Tom Edwards at 946-1824 for details.
