Q. Can I plant an apricot tree in the same hole where an apple tree was planted?

A. An apricot is a much better choice than an apple, which has numerous pests to control. A complex issue called replant disease can slow the growth and production of a new fruit tree. However, sometimes in a backyard situation, there are few options and it will survive fine.

Q. Are antibacterial soaps better than regular soap for cleaning and killing germs during handwashing?

A. There is no evidence that antibacterial soap is any more effective at killing germs than regular soap. And, in fact, using antibacterial soap might even lead to the development of bacteria that are resistant to the product’s antimicrobial agents — making it harder to kill germs in the future.

There are two steps in the handwashing process that enhance removal of bacteria and germs: the first is scrubbing your hands, and the second is running water to help flush away organisms removed by rubbing. Rub your hands vigorously for at least 20 seconds during handwashing and remember to scrub all surfaces, including the backs of hands, wrists, between fingers and under fingernails. Then rinse well in running water. If possible, dry hands with a disposable towel and use the towel to turn off the faucet.

Q. I would like to attend the 2016 Mid-Columbia Hay Growers Association meeting. Can you tell me where it is and what’s on the agenda?

A. It is planned from 8:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Feb. 17 at the Big Bend Community College in Moses Lake. We will be in the Advanced Technologies Education Center (ATEC) building.

This year, markets in hay production will be highlighted. We will have information on forage risk management; new options and strategies; high temperature and stress impact on alfalfa; impact of selecting the best alfalfa variety, and of course, everyone’s favorite, our export panel. As the date gets closer, find the full agenda and more information at www.wa-hay.org.

Questions should be called in to the WSU Extension offices in Kennewick at 735-3551 or Pasco at 545-3511.
