Q. I am preparing a holiday turkey for the first time. I am confused about how large of a turkey to buy and whether to buy fresh or frozen.

A. The recommendation for how large of a turkey to buy is 1 pound per person to 1 1/2 pounds per person. Select the lower end if you are serving more than one type of meat, or have a combination of adults and children, to allow for the large and smaller appetites.

Whether you select a fresh or frozen turkey is a personal preference. Each has advantages and disadvantages. If you like to shop in advance of cooking the meal, a frozen turkey is your best bet. But it requires time to thaw in the refrigerator, about one day for every 5 pounds of turkey. A fresh turkey is ready to cook, but should be bought only one to two days ahead of time.

Remember, once you get your fresh turkey home, refrigerate it right away. It is a good idea to reserve the turkey ahead of time so you are assured the size you want will be available.

Q. Where is most of the sweet corn grown in Washington?

A. Grant, Franklin and Benton counties. Walla Walla, Adams and Yakima counties also grow a number of acres.

Q. In addition to raising animals, what are some other youth activities provided by 4-H?

A. Members in a 4-H club can participate in any of the following activities:

▪ Community service projects: The entire club can plan a project. 4-H’ers do things to improve their community such as projects in conservation, beautification, safety or health.

▪ County contests and fairs: 4-H members can choose to take part in judged contests. Contests and fairs also give members a sense of pride and accomplishment, and 4-H’ers receive ribbons and prizes for their efforts. The Benton Franklin County Fair is our showcase event of the year.

▪  Public presentations: 4-H members show and tell others how to do something they have learned. Members learn public speaking and communication skills while helping others.

Questions should be called in to the WSU Extension offices in Kennewick at 735-3551 or Pasco at 545-3511.
