Dozens of Tri-Cities assisted living residents evacuated after frozen pipes burst
Dozens of residents at a Tri-Cities assisted living facility had to be evacuated early Thursday when a frozen pipe burst, flooding several floors.
Kennewick fire crews were called about 12:30 a.m. Thursday to the Brookdale at Canyon Lakes Assisted and Independent Living Facility, 2802 W. 35th Ave.
When crews arrived, they found a 2-inch fire system sprinkler line in the attic had broken and was leaking enough water to warrant moving 36 residents.
Some were moved to empty rooms in other parts of the center and others went to stay with family members, said a news release from Fire Chief Chad Michael.
The water damage resulted in flooding on all three floors in the south wing of the building.
Fire officials are reminding commercial building owners that the cold winter temperatures in the Tri-Cities this week can lead to frozen fire system pipes.
They recommended these steps to prevent problems:
▪ Check point drains where water naturally collects and empty the drains if necessary.
▪ Conduct visual inspections for signs of leaks or damage to pipes or valves in your system. Damage in your lines can allow water into your lines that can burst under freezing conditions.
▪ Check pressure gauges to ensure the pressure is sufficient to keep valves closed daily. A reduced pressure could be a sign of a water leak.
▪ Exposed pipes should be treated with insulation to protect against freezing.
▪ Have a professional service your system to help ensure you are at minimal risk of cold weather damage.
