Lift a glass. Mid-Columbia and Yakima Valley breweries win Washington craft beer awards

Organizers of the Washington Beer Awards have announced the winners for the 2024 competition.

Some 170 Washington craft breweries entered 1,219 beers in the 11th annual competition, which features blind judging. Winners were selected in more than 60 categories. The competition is organized by the Washington Brewers Guild, the Washington Beer Commission and Specialty Competitions LLC.

Several Southeast Washington breweries won medals: White Bluffs Brewing in Richland, Ice Harbor Brewing in Kennewick, Dwinell Country Ales in Goldendale, Varietal Beer Co. of Sunnyside, Single Hill Brewing Co. in Yakima and Bale Breaker Brewing Co. in Yakima.

White Bluffs Brewing: White Bluffs won gold in the Robust Porters category for its Shadows of Temptation, silver in the Rye and American Wheat Beers category for its Rock N Brown, silver in the Belgian Strong & Abbey Ales category for its Monking Around and bronze in the Juicy or Hazy Imperial or Double India Pale Ales category for its Super NOG.

White Bluffs is led by Mike Sutherland, brew master and founder, and Chardell Sutherland, co-owner and finance director. Mike Sutherland has been brewing for more than 25 years and opened White Bluffs in 2010.

Ice Harbor Brewing Co.: Ice Harbor won bronze for its American-style Brown & Black Ale, Bruneau Brown, and gold for its Fruit Wheat Beer, Tangerine Hefeweizen.

Dwinell Country Ales: Dwinell won silver for its Belgian and Belgian Inspired Ale, Lookie Loo, and swept the Brett Beers category, winning gold for its Summer Blush, silver for its Fever Dream, and bronze for its Fuzzword. Dwinnel Counry Ales was named Washington’s Very Small Brewery of the Year.

Varietal Beer Co.: Varietal won silver for its American Style Light Lager, Moxee Light, and silver for its Cream Ale, Two Wolves,

Single Hill Brewing Co.: Single Hill won gold for its American-style Pilsner, Adams Pils, gold for its Contemporary American-style Pilsner, Super Delicious., bronze for its “Other” American-style Lager, Flight Cancelled, silver for its American-style Strong Pale Ale, Eastside, and first for its Imperial or Double India Pale Ale, Mind Plant. Single Hill was also named Washington’s Large Brewery of the Year.

Bale Breaker Brewing Co.: Bale Breaker won silver for its Imperial or Double India Pale Ale, Bottomcutter IPA.
