Hulu to Stream 'Americana,' a 2023 Western Starring Sydney Sweeney, on June 26

To close out the month of June, Hulu is adding several new titles to its streaming library, including Americana, Tony Tost's 2023 neo-Western crime thriller starring Sydney Sweeney, Paul Walter Hauser, Halsey and others.

The film, which debuted at the 2023 South by Southwest Film & TV Festival, wasn't released in theaters until August 15, 2025. Upon arrival, it did not fare well at the box office, though critical reviews were more favorable.

When is Americana coming to Hulu?

The Lionsgate-produced movie will debut on Hulu this Friday, June 26, according to Cord Cutters News.

Along with Americana, Hulu will also welcome CMA Fest presented by SoFi and 2025's Queens of the Dead on that day.

More about Americana

The film is set in a small South Dakota town and its focal point is the Ghost Shirt, an "artifact of immense symbolic power to the Indigenous Lakota people who still reside in the area." The plot centers around a war between characters for possession of the relic.

Sweeney stars as Penny Jo Poplin, a waitress with a stammer who dreams of becoming a country singer. Hauser plays down-and-out military veteran Lefty Ledbetter, with Halsey portraying Mandy Starr, a young mother in an abusive relationship with Dillon MacIntosh (played by the late Eric Dane in one of his final movie roles).

Simon Rex, Toby Huss, Zahn McClarnon, Donald Cerrone, Joe Adler, Gavin Maddox Bergman, Harriet Sansom Harris and Derek Hinkey round out the main cast.

A box office bomb

Blessed with a reported $9 million budget, Americana opened to only $500,000 nationwide, with The Hollywood Reporter speculating at the time that Sweeney's recent American Eagle ad controversy may have limited the numbers.

"It's tough to know whether the controversy had any impact; if anything, it could have boosted awareness (Lionsgate Premiere's marketing spend was minimal, in keeping with its mandate)," THR said.

Critics were much more lenient

Despite the middling box office performance, Americana earned its share of positive reviews. The film has a 62% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, along with a 61 out of 100 ("generally favorable") on Metacritic.

Johnny Oleksinski of the New York Postpanned the film, rating it "terrible" and one out of four stars while criticizing Sweeney's performance. Deadlineand IndieWire were much more approving, however, and Men's Journal's Declan Gallagher said Americana was "must-see" despite flopping.

"Americana, Tony Tost's revisionist neo-Western starring Halsey, Paul Walter Hauser, and Sydney Sweeney, bombed at the box office when it was released last month. That's a shame, because the film, which is now streaming, is one of the year's most compelling and entertaining titles," Gallagher wrote. "Tost, in his directorial debut, has crafted a stylish, Tarantino-inspired crime-comedy that accomplishes what very few Tarantino imitators do: it works as its own film, with the stylistic indulgences feeling natural rather than forced."
