'The Agency' Cliffhanger Could Be Resolved for One Hidden Reason
After 10 binge-worthy episodes, The Agency Season 2 wrapped up all of its storylines, seemingly in a neat bow. Or did it? The final moments of the last episode of The Agency Season 2, "King Sacrifice," suggest there's a deeper mystery beyond this arc, and that perhaps, the most compromised and headstrong C.I.A. agent of them all could come back for another round of stories.
Here's how The Agency Season 2 ended and what it all might mean for a hypothetical Season 3. Plus, a very strange hack to find out how the cliffhanger resolves, even if Season 3 never happens. Spoilers ahead.
The Agency Season 2 Ending Explained
The Agency Season 2 essentially had roughly four major storylines: The internal hunt for an information leak at the CIA, Martian's quest to get Sami free, which involves selling information to the SIS, Gremlin's plight in Iran, and the mission to take down the militia kingpin known as Viking. And all of these stories were basically resolved in the final two episodes. Here's how:
- In Episode 9, Martian kills Jim Richardson, head of MI6, ending the blackmail scheme and the data leak, which Martian was a part of. Martian turns on Richardson when he realizes that Richardson is leaking his leaked information to China. Martian was okay with Richardson's rogue cell within MI6 getting the info, but leaking it to China was too far. This plot point makes it 100 percent clear to the CIA that Martian was leaking info, but also clear that Richardson was corrupt. So, it outs Martian as the mole, but it also makes it clear he wasn't aware of Richardson's deep corruption.
- Gremlin escapes and is then rescued in Iran. After a lot of back and forth, in which it really looked like she might not make it, Gremlin makes it out alive in the end in Episode 10.
- Henry is brought back to active duty after being falsely accused of being the mole. This basically resolves the internal security storyline, and the show doubles down on Henry being basically the only truly honest person in The Agency.
- Finally, Martian infiltrates the Valhalla base, posing as a diamond smuggler. Once there, he plays a game of chess with Viking, using a timer that has a bomb hidden inside. Martian blows up Valhalla, redeeming himself, and seemingly killing himself.
However, the final scenes of Episode 10 find Martian in captivity, very Casino Royale style. His captors claim to know who he is, meaning, in theory, they know he is a CIA agent. Or, do they know something else that we don't know?
The Agency Season 3 is not yet confirmed. But there's a possible hack for that.
Although Season 2 ends on a cliffhanger, Season 3 of The Agency has not been publicly confirmed. Yet. That said, there is a hidden way to chart what could happen after the end of Season 2, even before a hypothetical Season 3 comes out - as long as you're okay with watching a French show with English subtitles. (Or if you speak French!)
The Agency is an adaptation of the French spy show The Bureau, which ran for five seasons from 2015 to 2020. Although the plotlines aren't identical in each season, Season 2 of The Bureau did end with the lead agent, codename Malotru, getting captured. And Season 3 of the show began with a storyline of how to get him out of captivity.
So, in theory, showrunners and writers Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth already have a ton of material that could be adapted into Season 3, which means they already know how Martian will escape.
Will we see it happen? That's unclear. But, if you get really impatient, you could, in theory, just start watching The Bureau Season 3. Just remember to turn on your English subtitles!
The Agency and The Bureau both stream on Paramount+.
