It's not every day that a dog alerts their family to a neighbor in distress, especially a dog like Lillie Ann. She's not a police dog or a service dog and has no formal training to help those in need, but she sprang into action when she heard something in the building that no human did.

This dog saved her neighbor's life-all because of her strong hearing and eagerness to help.

Her keen ears were the first to hear her neighbor's cries for help, and she refused to rest until someone investigated. Sadly, her neighbor had fallen and was lying on the floor, unable to get up, but the hero dog's family called for help right away.

"She went in and we found her lying there and so then we called the ambulance and they came and administered to her and took her to the hospital," Lillie Ann's dad, Robert Fandre, toldWSAW. The neighbor is now recovering, though the Fandres want to respect her privacy while she heals.

Even though Lillie Ann is not a service dog, she often helps out around the house and alerts Robert to his own health complications. She truly is a one-of-a-kind dog!

What's not unique to Lillie Ann, however, is her excellent hearing. Stanley Coren, Ph.D, shared with the American Kennel Club that, at certain frequencies, "dogs' ears have sensitivity so much higher than humans that a comparison would be pointless." Not only can dogs hear much softer sounds than humans can, but they can hear much higher-pitched sounds, too.

Do Dogs Alert Their Humans to Emergencies?

All dogs (except deaf dogs and seniors with hearing loss, of course) can hear sounds humans cannot, but not all dogs alert their humans to emergencies. This can be a matter of training, eagerness to work, or just learning that certain sounds indicate a problem. It's unusual that a dog without formal training would alert their family to emergencies as Lillie Ann did, but it's certainly not impossible.

It's hard to say whether this little white dog knows she's a hero, but there's no question that her parents do. Her mom, Karen, told WSAW, "Of all the dogs we've had, we knew from the start that there was something special about her, and we found out now for sure. We've known that for a long time, but we know for sure."

Good girl, Lillie Ann!
