1992 Movie Named Among Best Westerns of All Time – And It Was Made on a Shoestring Budget
The Western film genre has plenty of exciting films that could keep you busy watching for years, even decades. The earlier Westerns are projected to have been made in the 1800s, but the earliest on record is Edwin S. Porter's first feature film, Western, The Great Train Robbery, which came out in 1903. It was only 11 minutes but packed a punch and started an entire genre.
"Intercutting studio shots with matte shots of the passing landscape, Porter created the illusion of a moving train," The Met explains of the movie. "The film ends with an iconic shot of a gunman firing his pistol directly at the audience, and the color-tinted gun smoke added to the film's popular appeal."
Well, here we are more than a century later, and Westerns are still being made. Now, one film that came out in 1992 has been named one of the best of all time, and it was made on a tiny budget.
1992 Movie Named Among Best Westerns of All Time
That film is El Mariachi. The film stars Carlos Gallardo as El Mariachi, a "traveling guitar player with the modest desire to play music for a living," as Rotten Tomatoes describes.
Rotten Tomatoes calls it one of the greatest Westerns of all time. "Made on a shoestring budget, El Mariachi's story is not new," they state of the film. "However, the movie has so much energy that it's thoroughly enjoyable."
The film starred Carlos Gallardo, Consuelo Gómez, Reinol Martinez and Peter Marquardt. It was directed by Robert Rodriguez.
The movie received raves. "While the story may be a common one (for the action genre, at least), Rodriguez, who wrote, produced, shot and edited the entire film himself, has a uniquely straightforward wit that makes what might otherwise have been just another shoot-'em-up something more than that," the Austin Chronicle stated, via Metacritic.
It's charming to see a movie made on a shoestring budget capture the hearts of so many fans of the Western genre.
