There are a few things in the world that scream elegance like French doors. It doesn't matter if they are dividing rooms, enclosing a pantry, or opening up to a picturesque balcony; French doors are the epitome of class. They add automatic value to your home, especially if they are styled with painted glass, though a solid-frame French door is just as coveted.

They actually have a fascinating history. In the early 1500s, as the Renaissance influenced French architecture and design, builders and makers were banishing dark, Gothic interiors and opening rooms to natural light. Symmetry also became a primary focal point in design. Architects wanted to marry all of these concepts-light, structure, and separation-and thus, the French door was born. It took Europe by storm and has been a popular way to bring a little of the outdoors in for centuries.

Unfortunately, it isn't a cheap feature to install. According to Refresh Renovations, a basic set of aluminum French doors costs around $3,000+, while high-quality wooden doors run from $3,500 to $7,000.

However, with a little ingenuity and elbow grease, you can DIY your own for far, far less.

DIYing Your Own French Doors

We can't take credit for this brilliant idea. TikToker @karissaathome really wanted French pantry doors to separate her pantry and laundry rooms, but she couldn't find a custom set for much less than $4,000. So what did she do instead? She headed to Home Depot and snagged a pair of Clear Glass Solid Core Spruce Wood French Bi-Fold Doors.

After slapping on a beautiful wax-and-stain combo and cutting them down to size, she added her own custom hinges and hardware to complete the look, achieving absolutely stunning results.

"This is the most incredibly helpful DIY I've ever seen. Cannot wait to do exactly this in our new house," one commenter wrote.

"When I tell you this is EXACTLY what I've been looking for for my laundry room. THANK YOU," added another.

"Let me hire you," begged a third.

The grand total for her entire project was less than $300, which, as she said, was practically like making money on the build. Excuse us while we run to Home Depot!
