60 Years Ago, a Country Hit Was Written in 10 Minutes for a Fan

Fans are often inspired by their idols and their artistry, but in one rare case, for country legend Loretta Lynn, a fan inspired her to write one of her most beloved songs - "You Ain't Woman Enough (To Take My Man)."

Written in late 1965 and released in 1966, "the record "arrived when Lynn, with a decade of singing in clubs under her belt, saw her career reach new heights, following chart hits and a sizeable fan following. The mid '60s was when Lynn experienced renewed success as a songwriter as well as a singer, with "Dear Uncle Sam," a self-written track about the brutalities of the ongoing Vietnam War, was a Top 10 country hit in 1966.

As documented by PBS, "You Ain't Woman Enough" blossomed from a backstage conversation before a concert between Lynn and a fan, who was "was really painted up," about some recent relationship troubles. According to the star, another woman at the concert had tried to make a move on the fan's husband, to which Lynn reassured the woman, "Honey, she ain't woman enough to take your man!"

Just ten minutes later, "You Ain't Woman Enough" was born in Lynn's dressing room, and the musician took to the stage, where the troublemaking other woman reportedly was.

The song peaked at number 2 on the U.S. Country Charts upon its debut. Although "You Ain't Woman Enough" wasn't Loretta's most commercially successful hit, with 16 number 1 country singles under her belt during her 60-year career, it became one of her signature songs. Emblematic of the strength of Lynn's voice - both in vocal and songwriting process - the song is a perfect representation of why the Kentucky native became a pioneering figure for women in the country genre and for female songwriters.
