Seven Years Ago, Capcom Released One of the Greatest Action Games of All Time, and It's Now Selling Better Than Ever

In 2019, Capcom was beginning its rise to what many fans now know as the "CapGod" era, with the release of the Resident Evil 2 remake and Devil May Cry 5 in the same year, just two months apart. Surprisingly, in 2026, one of those games is now selling more than when it first debuted.

Noted by GameSpark (text in Japanese and roughly translated by VGC), Capcom's updated sales page now includes Devil May Cry 5's sales data over the years. According to the data, Devil May Cry 5 has sold 2.7 million copies during Capcom's last fiscal year.

During its release year in 2019, Devil May Cry 5 sold an estimated 2.1 million units, and it averaged around that same number for the following years, until this latest fiscal year. In total, Capcom's financial reports estimate that the game has sold around 11 million units, and is currently selling better than Capcom's other major franchises, like Monster Hunter Wilds.

The continued interest in the game has largely been attributed to audience interest in the Devil May Cry Netflix anime adaptation. Additionally, a Nintendo Switch 2 version of Devil May Cry 5 was recently announced at the Nintendo Direct for a June 23, 2026, release date.

According to Metacritic, Devil May Cry 5 is sitting at a respectable 87 metascore, with critics widely praising the game's creative combat system, multi-character playstyles, replayability, art direction, and soundtrack. There was some criticism aimed at the game's narrative, characters, and writing.

It's also worth noting that the sales data also shows an increase in Resident Evil games this fiscal year compared to the previous one, but none of those games outsold their debut year.

With the continued success of Street Fighter 6 (including adding Tifa Lockhart from Final Fantasy 7 as a heavily demanded guest character for the next season), Resident Evil Requiem, Pragmata, and the upcoming September launch of Onimusha: Way of the Sword, it seems video game fans will have plenty to chew on from one of the most respected developers and publishers in the industry.
