48 Years Ago, 'Space Invaders' Was Released

On June 16, 1978, the first edition of Space Invaders was released in arcade halls in Japan.

The game would go on to become an undisputed pioneer of the video game world, marking one of the first success stories that helped transform arcade machines from a rare novelty into a booming industry all across the globe.

Space Invaders was released by Taito in Japan, where it became an immediate hit. It was the first-ever video game with endless gameplay, allowing users to continue playing until they were beaten. This introduced a whole new element of competitive gameplay to video gaming, forcing players to keep coming back in order to set the best high score.

There had been arcade games before Space Invaders, but none that actually gave players a clear way to challenge their friends and keep playing as long as they could. This was the crucial evolution that turned Space Invaders into such a sensation, and the game was later released across the world.

Space Invaders sees players defeat waves of descending aliens with a deadly laser that moves left to right across the screen, blasting away any enemies in its path. This meant the game essentially had just one gameplay mechanic: move horizontally. The barrier to entry was almost nonexistent, and even those who'd never played an arcade game before could climb up the leaderboards.

The game is also widely credited as being the first "fixed shooter", meaning a shooter game where the perspective doesn't move. This became a hugely popular format for arcade games, not just because of how simple they were to make, but because the lack of movement made them much easier for new players to master.

The success of Space Invaders ushered in a golden age of arcade gaming, with countless developers citing this original game as the main inspiration behind their work. It opened up the industry to a whole new market, proving that games didn't need to be complicated or necessarily difficult to be successful.

Space Invaders has endured as a touchstone of pop culture over the decades, with the game receiving countless remasters and reissues on different home gaming consoles. The Atari 2600 is a perfect demonstration; when Space Invaders was released on the console, it quadrupled its sales. No game has ever dictated the sales of a console that strongly since.
