Meet Vozinha: The Cape Verde Superstar Who Shocked Spain in World Cup Draw
Going into the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Spain was widely regarded as the favorite to win it all. So imagine the shock and awe of fans to see Spain in a highly competitive match-up with Cape Verde. To add further perspective to this, Spain entered the tournament ranked #2, while their opponents were ranked #64, in Cape Verde's debut in the World Cup. So the fact that Spain was forced to not only settle for a draw at 0-0, but also the team didn't even score a goal, still has many in the soccer world flabbergasted. One person who probably isn't surprised by the game's outcome is the key to Cape Verde's success, the team's goalkeeper, Josimar Dias, aka Vozinha. The man was like a brick wall, helping to fend off Spain's 27 shot attempts for the game.
At 40, Vozinha Makes History in Cape Verde's World Cup Debut
At 40 years old, Vozinha is making history. First, the moment he stepped on the field in Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium, he became the oldest player to make a World Cup debut with a nation. Then, by the conclusion of the scoreless match that ended in a draw, per Fox Sports, he became the third-oldest goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet in a World Cup match, and the oldest goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet in a World Cup debut.
Vozinha Plays for Portugal's Chaves During Regular Season
Vozinha serves as the goalkeeper for Portugal's Grupo Desportivo de Chaves, or Chaves, outside of the world tournament. While playing for the team, he's earned the respect of teammates, opponents, and fans as a highly skilled goalkeeper in the world of professional football (aka American soccer).
Does Vozinha Have a Wife?
The short of it is, this information is not readily known. Vozinha does a great job at keeping his private life private. But everyone is entitled to some privacy, so I understand the urge not to share personal business as a high-profile athlete readily.
When Is Cape Verde's Next Match?
Cape Verde is scheduled to take on Uruguay on June 21, at 6 PM ET. This will be another tough match for Cape Verde, as their opponents came into the tournament ranked #16. However, with some pep in their step, not having lost to the juggernaut Team Spain, Cape Verde and Vonzinha may be ready to defy the odds again.
