Netflix Confirms Removal of One of Its Biggest Shows
In the midst of a major summer shake-up on the streaming service, Netflix will no longer license one of its biggest draws on its platform.
"We are sorry to say that Gilmore Girls Seasons 1-7 will be leaving Netflix in the US on June 30," the streamer announced via X/Twitter on June 15. "Raising a cup of coffee to every fan who visited Stars Hollow with us."
Netflix completed the sad sign-off with a quote from the show's titular girls, mother-and-daughter duo Lorelai and Rory Gilmore: "'It's a show?' 'It's a lifestyle. It's a religion.'"
Gilmore Girls, which originally aired on The WB and later on The CW from 2000 to 2007, joined Netflix just shy of 12 years ago, in October 2014. The streamer also produced a Netflix Original sequel series, titled Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, a four-part revival which premiered in November 2016.
Despite being off the air for 7 years before debuting on Netflix, Gilmore Girls has been one of the platform's most popular, as well as most consistently watched, TV shows for over a decade.
While Netflix is notoriously private about its viewing figures, it was previously confirmed that, between July and December 2023, Gilmore Girls amassed 45 million views, 9 years into its time on the platform. According to data collected by TV outlet Vulture, published in 2024, the iconic 00s series collected 20 billion minutes of streaming in 2022 alone.
The success of Gilmore Girls on Netflix is a classic example of "The Netflix Bump" phenomenon, where shows that previously debuted on another TV network or platform find an unprecedented level of popularity and success on the streaming giant.
Despite this sad news, Gilmore Girls will still be streaming elsewhere in the U.S., with the series still available on Disney+ and Hulu for the time being.
