West Marine files for bankruptcy, plans to close 5 WA stores

Does this summer heat make you want to go on the water? If so, you may want to hit up your local West Marine store before the water-gear and boating-supplies giant shutters five Washington stores.

The Florida-based company filed for bankruptcy last month and later announced it would close 59 stores - around a quarter of its nationwide retail locations.

Five of those stores are in Washington: 3560 Meridian St. in Bellingham, 5971 State Highway 303 N.E. in Bremerton, 1716 View Drive in Everett, 2428 Washington St. in Port Townsend and 5306 E. Sprague Ave. in Spokane.

The closures didn't hit the Seattle store at 1400 N.W. 45th as of Monday.

According to a West Marine announcement, all closing stores will have sales before their shutdown.

In a news release, the company attributed its bankruptcy to headwinds including supply chain disruptions, extreme weather events and shifts in consumer behavior.

A West Marine spokesperson said in an email that the company is still evaluating its real estate portfolio in coordination with landlords.

We are committed to supporting affected Crew Members through this transition and will continue serving our customers at remaining locations, as well as online and through our West Marine Pro App, the spokesperson wrote.
