Duran Duran's 1981 Album Became a Top 10 Hit 45 Years Ago Today

On June 15, 1981, British pop-rock group Duran Duran released their debut studio album and changed the trajectory of pop music forever. The record was preceded by two popular singles, "Planet Earth" and "Careless Memories", which both broke into the U.K. Top 40 and kick-started the band's popularity.

The album was heavily inspired by new wave, synth-pop acts like The Human League, Chic, and even David Bowie, which attracted plenty of attention to Duran Duran straight away. Later versions of the record even featured a cover of Bowie's "Fame", which had previously been his first No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Duran Duran was an immediate success in the band's home country, charting at No. 3 and scoring the band's first Top 10 single with "Girls on Film". The album was initially unsuccessful in America, but it eventually made its way onto the Billboard 200 once the band had found further success a few years later.

Duran Duran became synonymous with its music videos-one of which made global headlines due to its promiscuous content and controversial sexual themes. "Girls on Film" was among the first videos to become popular on MTV, which was launched just a few months after the album's release.

The "Girls on Film" video became the talking point of the album, cementing Duran Duran as visionary creatives, not just pop singers. It was the biggest hit from the album without contention, and while many critics weren't convinced by Duran Duran's early offerings, it was hard to argue with the star power of this hit single.

Without "Girls on Film" and the support it received from MTV, Duran Duran's debut album easily could have faded into the background of pop culture. Instead, it became a touchstone of the New Romantic movement, inspiring countless other synth-pop groups to develop this sound throughout the 1980s.

Duran Duran's follow-up album, Rio, was even more successful than their first. It peaked at No. 2 in the United Kingdom and No. 6 in the United States, with lead singles "Hungry Like the Wolf" and "Rio" finally breaking into the Billboard Hot 100 and sparking the band's American fanbase.
