21 Years Ago, The Greatest Standalone Superhero Trilogy Ever Was Born

Superhero movies have been part of Hollywood's fabric for quite some time, with many films becoming blockbuster hits. Case in point, Spider-Manhas become a fan-favorite franchise among moviegoers, whether it's the three movies with Tobey Maguire, the two with Andrew Garfield, or the three with Tom Holland starring as the web-slinging hero. There's also the iconic Iron Man trilogy starring the one and only Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark.

While Marvel has served as the creative foundation for several popular standalone superhero series like Spider-Man, Iron Man, and Captain America, the greatest standalone superhero trilogy actually comes from Marvel's rival, the DC Universe. And today marks 21 years since the first film in this movie series debuted in theaters and launched it all.

‘Batman Begins' Debuted in the U.S. on June 15, 2005

Batman Begins premiered in the United States on June 15, 2005. It served as the first in a three-movie series spearheaded by Oscar-winning director and writer Christopher Nolan, with Oscar-winning actor Christian Bale picking up the mantle of the bat-inspired hero. Here's the official synopsis of the film:

"As a young boy, Bruce Wayne watched in horror as his millionaire parents were slain in front of him--a trauma that leads him to become obsessed with revenge. But the opportunity to avenge his parents' deaths is cruelly taken away from him by fate. Fleeing to the East, where he seeks counsel with the dangerous but honorable ninja cult leader known as Ra's Al-Ghul, Bruce returns to his now decaying Gotham City, which is overrun by organized crime and other dangerous individuals manipulating the system. Meanwhile, Bruce is slowly being swindled out of Wayne Industries, the company he inherited. The discovery of a cave under his mansion, along with a prototype armored suit, leads him to assume a new persona, one which will strike fear into the hearts of men who do wrong; he becomes Batman!!!"

Why Christopher Nolan's ‘Batman' is the Best Standalone Superhero Trilogy

In short, yes. When Nolan took over the directing and writing reins of the cinematic version of Batman, he had a tall order to fill. Batman is one of the most popular superheroes in history, and before his work, there were already 5 other Batman movies. In this vein, Bale also had a lot to prove as he had to come up with a performance that surpassed those of Val Kilmer, George Clooney, Adam West, and arguably the best Batman before 2005, Michael Keaton.

All that being said, Nolan and Bale hit the ball out of the park with their collaboration for three Batman movies: Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and The Dark Knight Rises. With the first installment in the series, Nolan was nuanced enough to tell the story of Bruce Wayne in his evolution to becoming the heroic bat. Nolan strikes a different tone from previous movies and thankfully, doesn't rely on the usual Batman villains to move along the story, but Ra's al Ghul (Liam Neeson), Carmine Falcone (Tom Wilkinson), and Scarecrow (Cillian Murphy) instead.

Obviously, the crown jewel of the Nolan trilogy is The Dark Knight. Although the main villain in the film is the Joker, the dearly departed Heath Ledger delivered the greatest live-action version of the character known to man, with only Joaquin Phoenix's version being anywhere close to comparable.

The Dark Knight Rises may hit a sore spot for some when it comes to the voice of Tom Hardy's Bane. However, it does a great job in closing out the trilogy. Plus, Anne Hathaway is a great Catwoman.

Removing subjective opinion from the equation, all three of Nolan's Batman movies are "Certified Fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes, with rave reviews from both critics and fans. Additionally, they each have raked in millions at the box office and remain memorable parts of pop culture. Plus, there's an argument to be made that Nolan's knack for telling darker storylines with more "realistic" depictions, opting not to make things so kitsch and campy, inspired superhero movies that came after it.

Batman Begins and the other Nolan sequels are available to stream on HBO Max.
