Nancy Guthrie Update: FBI Revealed Key Suspect Details

What's known so far about the suspect in the Nancy Guthrie case? Some details about the suspect have emerged, although the identity of the person (or persons) who abducted Savannah Guthrie's mom remains unclear.

The biggest development in the case by far came when authorities released eerie photos and videos from the door cam of Guthrie's Tucson home. Experts in criminal investigation have subsequently pored over those photos looking for clues about the suspect, and the FBI has released some key details, such as that the suspect appears to be a man. Reddit threads are devoted to dissecting the known details about the suspect.

FBI Director Kash Patel released the photos and videos on X on February 10, writing, "Working with our partners – as of this morning, law enforcement has uncovered these previously inaccessible new images showing an armed individual appearing to have tampered with the camera at Nancy Guthrie's front door the morning of her disappearance," he wrote. Guthrie vanished from her Arizona home on February 1. The motive is not clear.

Here are the details gleaned about the suspect so far.

The FBI Has Estimated the Suspect's Height & Gender by Analyzing the Door Cam Video

The FBI's experts think they've estimated the suspect's height.

"New identifying details about the suspect in the kidnapping of Nancy Guthrie have been confirmed after a forensic analysis of the doorbell camera footage by the FBI's Operational Technology Division," the FBI's Phoenix office wrote.

"The suspect is described as a male, approximately 5'9" – 5'10" tall, with an average build. In the video, he is wearing a black, 25-liter ‘Ozark Trail Hiker Pack' backpack." The FBI released a photo showing a similar backpack.

"I think [the suspect's] gait is interesting," former FBI special agent Tracy Walder told Page Six. "While [their] walk is not overly distinctive, I do think that's something the FBI could look at."

Susan Constantine, a body language expert, told Fox News that the suspect's "jawline appears puffy, which she said could indicate beard hair beneath the mask. She also said the subject's head shape and lack of visible hair suggest the individual may be bald."

The Suspect Carried His Gun in an Amateurish Way, Experts Say

The manner in which the suspect was carrying the firearm, strapped to the front of his body, caught the eye of experts. "That is a very non-conventional way to carry a firearm. Very non-conventional," former agent Mark Harrigan told The New York Post.

"He has it in the open, which is unusual, because normally you would want it concealed when you're going to do a crime, so you're not calling attention to yourself with an exposed firearm," he told The Post. "That's potentially somebody that's not normally armed or carrying a firearm around in public. Normally, you'd have it on the hip."

The suspect may have left behind DNA, which also speaks to a disorganized or amateurish kidnapper. According to CBS News, the Pima County Sheriff "has said DNA was collected at the property that isn't from Guthrie or those in close contact with her, and that investigators were working to identify who it came from."

It's also possible that the suspect photos are from different days. The Pima County Sheriff wrote that the agency is aware that the released photos show the suspect "in different stages of attire, including with and without a backpack."

Reddit Users Analyzed the Suspect Photos & Came Up With Their Own Observations

On Reddit, people shared their own observations from the suspect photos. "Looks a little feminine, but doubt it's a female," wrote one person. "No car in background. Jacket looks like it could be recognizable to someone who knows them. Did they work alone? Was there a getaway driver? Was there another person working on the backdoor at this time?"

"I was convinced it was somebody highly intelligent that had done a meticulous job (especially if the ransom notes were legit)," another person wrote. "Seeing the video unconvinced me of any of that. Trying to hide your face from the camera with a couple of twigs AFTER the camera had already captured you. What a moron."

Added another Reddit user: "My first thought was how unprepared/ disorganized this guy is. Lots of movement right at the front of the house, open and visible, super suspicious not trying to conceal his movements at all. A 'professional' criminal would have used a jammer for the camera, not a piece of a ripped bush. Not planned very well. Then his gloves looked weird, but it occurred to me that he might have latex type gloves over another pair. This new development makes the whole thing even stranger in my opinion."

Another person observed, "They weren't as prepared as I previously thought. They don't seem to have any idea that she had a nest and it definitely caught them by surprise. Seems like a simple thing to miss."

"Extremely chilling pictures," another person noted. "Look closely..suspect has a mustache," another person wrote. "There is definitely a beard. There is one image (with the flashlight in the mouth) where you clearly see a mustache," another person wrote.

Some people believe that the suspect might be wearing makeup, perhaps even eyeliner.
