49 Years Ago Today: Legendary Disco Band's Signature Song Hit's No. 1
On this day 49 years ago, one of the most iconic tracks from the legendary disco and funk band KC and the Sunshine Band hit No. 1 on the billboard charts.
I'm Your Boogie Man was released in 1977 and it didn't take long for the track to make it to the top of the Billboard charts on June 11, 1977. It was the fourth No. 1 hit for the disco and funk band that ended their careers with five No. 1 singles.
The Song Initially Had a Different Title
Harry Wayne Casey revealed the title of the song was initially I'll Be a Son of a Gun and the lyrics would have gone, "I'll be a son of a gun, Look what you've done."
"Then I went back and 'I'm Your Boogie Man' came into my head because I was thinking about how disc jockeys were always there on the radio. Like it says:
Early morning
Late afternoon
Or at midnight
It's never too soon
I'm your Boogie Man
"It's taking the theme of the disc jockey being the one that's there for you all the time, no matter when," he said.
"So it was as if I was a disc jockey, I'm the Boogie Man. Like if you call in and want to hear a certain song, or talk about what was going on in your life, I'm your Boogie Man. And of course I put in 'turn me on,' but that could also mean turned on the radio,'" he added.
The Song Was Written About An Actual DJ
KC and the Sunshine band wrote I'm Your Boogie Man about Robert W. Walker, a Florida radio DJ, who was an early advocate of Get Down Tonight, which went on to become the Sunshine Band's first No. 1.
Talking to Songfacts, Finch said, "We wrote the song about [Walker] without telling him. He was the Boogie Man that brought all the funk and the good feeling and the vibes to the people every morning."
