Mercedes' 745-Mile EV Battery Maker Just Hit The Nasdaq
US-based maker of solid-state batteries, Factorial Energy, has listed on the Nasdaq. The manufacturer made the batteries that propelled Mercedes' EQS sedan to 745 miles on a single charge last year. "We built Factorial to solve one of the hardest problems in energy – making solid-state real at scale," CEO Siyu Huang said during the company's announcement.
In September, Mercedes-Benz fitted its EQS EV with Factorial's solid-state batteries for a range test. At the time, Mercedes' Markus Schäfer called the technology a "game-changer" for electric vehicles. Depending on battery pack size and other constraints, most EVs deliver between 250 and 350 miles of range, though some can manage 400 miles. In its testing, Mercedes said that the Factorial batteries increased usable energy in the car by 25 percent, all while maintaining nearly the same weight and dimensions as the EQS' standard lithium-ion battery cells.
In addition to its partnership with Mercedes-Benz, Favtorial has partnerships with Hyundai and Kia, as well as Stellantis. All are planning next-generation solid-state EVs. They won't just find a home in today's cars, Huang said. He intends the company "to scale, providing power to drones, robotics, and next-generation energy systems."
Factorial's batteries are already on the road, albiet in a very limited use case. Through partnership with Karma Automotive, the company built its first commercial solid-state battery program. The Karma Kaveya promises more than 1,000 horsepower and 1,270 lb-ft of torque with in excess of 250 miles of range, and a 0-60 mph time under 3.0 seconds when it arrives late next year.
Factorial's batteries promise improvement in energy density, charge times, and longer range. In a Stellantis test, the batteries were able to charge from 10% to more than 90% in just 18 minutes. The battery pack is also a third the size of traditional EV battery packs. Factorial will collect around $110 million in gross proceeds to support its plans after its Nasdaq debut.
