63 Years Ago Today: Legendary Rock Band Released Its First Single

On this day 63 years ago, one of the most legendary rock bands in music history released their first single - a cover of a unique hit from Chuck Barry.

The Rolling Stones recorded Come On at Olympic Sound Studios in Barnes, south west London, on May 10, 1963, just a day after finalizing their record deal. The song was eventually released on June 7, 1963 as the band's first single and set a path to superstardom for Mick Jagger and company.

Come On eventually hit No. 21 in the British charts to launch the band's iconic career.

Mick Jagger 'Over the Moon' After Hearing First Track on Radio

Mick Jagger admitted he didn't have much faith in Decca Records after the band stumbled through a few issues while recording their first track.

"I was told by Decca that the record would be played that weekend by Brian Matthew on the big Saturday morning BBC show called Saturday Club, I was very doubtful if this was such a cert as Decca records had let us down so many times," he said, via The Independent.

"But come the day I was glued to the radio at ten o'clock and there it was. First 45 played was ours - Come On."

The legendary frontman admitted, "We were, how's it go, over the moon."

The band's manager, Andrew Loog Oldham, just wanted to get a track out as quickly as possible, according to guitarist Keith Richards.

"At the time it was done just to get a record out," he said. "We never wanted to hear it. The idea was Andrew's - to get a strong single so they'd let us make an album which back then was a privilege."

In a 2013 concert in Toronto for their 50th and Counting Tour, the Rolling Stones performed the single for the first time since 1965.
