The comedy series focuses on a woman trying to rebuild her life and career as a stylist in New York City. Survival of the Thickest stars Michelle Buteau as the main character, Mavis Beaumont, and is based on a book of the same name that she wrote. The show also heavily focuses on her chosen family of friends, who are brought to life by Tone Bell, Marouane Zotti, Tasha Smith, and Anissa Felix.

Co-produced by Netflix and A24, Survival of the Thickest was originally announced in January 2022 and premiered on the streaming service on July 13, 2023. Fans had to wait nearly two years for more, as it wasn't until March 27, 2025, that the series' second season arrived. Now, viewers are only weeks away from getting to see how the story will end.
