MOD Pizza co-founders sell century-old Medina mansion for $11.6M
MOD Pizza co-founders Scott and Ally Svenson have sold their Medina mansion for nearly $11.6 million.
"The Gables" home, completed in 1908, is considered to be the oldest home in Medina along the eastern shore of Lake Washington, according to the luxury-lifestyle magazine Robb Report.
The husband and wife entrepreneurs originally listed the home for $14.1 million in July 2024, just after selling MOD Pizza to Southern California-based Elite Restaurant Group for an undisclosed price. But the home hit the market at a rough time for sellers - rising interest rates and economic uncertainty slowed luxury and non-luxury home sales alike.
However, the six-bedroom, five-and-a-half-bath home still sold for about $4.4 million over its assessed value, according to King County property records.
The mansion, designed by architectural firm Bebb & Mendel for businessman Edward Webster, underwent a complete renovation and restoration in 2007, according to Robb Report.
The 8,570-square-foot home sits on a 0.75-acre plot of land along Overlake Drive, where some of the richest families and most impressive homes in the Seattle area congregate.
A Zillow listing shows that the outside of the home is surrounded by trees and gardens. But the inside has a moody atmosphere with wood finishings and a cheetah-print carpet cascading down the stairs.
The listing notes "magical pathways wind past the elliptical pond," "espaliered apple trees," "brilliant hydrangeas," "lush gardens" and an "enchanting pool."
The design concept is "English men's club meets Seattle farm home," according to the home's interior designer, Rocky Rochon.
Scott and Ally Svenson both grew up in the Seattle area but lived in the United Kingdom for 11 years. During that time, they founded a successful coffee chain inspired by specialty coffee in their hometown, Seattle Coffee Company, in London in 1994.
Starbucks acquired the company for around $83 million in Starbucks stock in 2003, according to The Seattle Times archives.
A few years after purchasing the Medina mansion, the couple cooked up an idea for a Chipotle-style casual pizza restaurant called MOD Pizza. (MOD stands for made-on-demand.) Customers could choose from dozens of toppings and add as many as they wanted for the same price. A high-speed oven would then cook the 6- to 11-inch pizzas in minutes.
In 2008, they opened their first MOD Pizza in downtown Seattle. They would expand to around 500 locations over the next decade and a half. But after financial woes and underperforming stores in 2024, the Svensons sold MOD Pizza.
Scott Svenson is now the executive chairman of the Seattle salad chain Evergreens.
The Svensons and their listing agent with Windermere did not respond to requests for comment.
