Golden Retrievers are so beloved that many people can't help but wonder if any other dog could truly compare. With their friendly temperament, intelligence, and loyalty, they've become one of the most trusted family dogs for first-time owners, families, and outdoor enthusiasts alike.

But that popularity also raises a simple question: what other dogs offer that same Golden Retriever personality?

"Goldens are popular for good reason," says veterinarian Dr. Sarah Wooten. "They tend to be social, affectionate, eager to please, playful and family-oriented."

That combination of traits is exactly what people are really looking for when they search for "Golden Retriever type" dogs-even if they're open to different sizes, coats, or appearances.

So if you're looking for a companion breed with that same loyal, loving energy, veterinarians say there are several canines that come very close. Here are 7 dog breeds similar to Golden Retrievers, according to vets.

These devoted dogs aren't necessarily identical in appearance, but they tend to match Golden Retrievers in temperament and everyday behavior. Many are known for being easygoing, people-focused, and well-suited to active households.

If there were a close cousin to the Golden Retriever, the Flat-Coated Retriever would probably top the list. These sporting dogs share a similar build, friendly disposition and love of people, as Goldens do, though they have a sleek black or liver-colored coat rather than golden fur.

"Flat-Coated Retrievers often remind people of Goldens," says Dr. Nathaniel Rakestraw, veterinarian at Telavets.com. "However, they have an even bigger sense of humor and are known for their upbeat, social nature."

Often described as "puppies for life," these companion dogs hang on to a youthful enthusiasm well into adulthood. And like Goldens, they love active households where they can participate in family activities, outdoor adventures and ample amounts of playtime.

"For someone who enjoys the cheerful, social nature of a Golden Retriever but wants a slightly different-looking retriever, a Flat-Coated Retriever can feel very familiar," Wooten explains.
