Two Maverick cardrooms close in WA, laying off 123 employees

Two cardrooms owned by Kirkland-based gaming company Maverick Gaming are set to close, with 123 employees losing their jobs in the process.

Silver Dollar Mill Creek Casino in Bothell and Crazy Moose Mountlake Casino in Mountlake Terrace will shutter July 31, according to worker adjustment and retraining notifications received Friday.

Upon closure, 41 employees at Silver Dollar Mill Creek Casino and 82 workers at Crazy Moose Mountlake Casino will be laid off.

Maverick filed for bankruptcy in July, shuttering four other Seattle-area cardrooms: Dragon Tiger Casino in Mountlake Terrace, Palace Casino in Lakewood, Silver Dollar in Renton and Roman Casino in Seattle.

In Washington, bars and taverns can sell pull tabs, and commercial cardrooms can run table games, but only Native American tribes can run casinos. The tribal gambling establishments are allowed to feature slot machines and sports betting, unlike the others.

Maverick didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

The company first informed the Washington State Employment Security Department about the permanent closure of both gambling houses on Sept. 26, with the closure date originally set for Dec. 2, human resources director Christine Wisniewski wrote.

The Site did not ultimately close at that time because, as part of an ongoing bankruptcy proceeding, Maverick Washington LLC was actively negotiating a potential sale of the Site to a buyer, per the notice.

Affected positions in the layoffs include table game dealers, cashiers, bartenders and security specialists.
