What You'll Need to Get Started
To get started, you'll want to either find blank ceramic tiles or make your own.
If you're making your own, you'll need to either use oven-bake clay (less recommended but easier) or find regular firing clay and a kiln. If you don't have immediate access to a kiln, many local pottery shops will likely allow you to use theirs for a small price, if you reach out to them.
If you are using oven-bake or polymer clay, you'll want to create your tiles first, bake them according to the package instructions, paint them and finally, seal them with a glossy clear finish.
If you are using regular clay, you'll want to make the tiles, fire them, glaze them with your paint and fire them for a final time.
Lastly, if you're planning to buy tiles and paint over them, you really only need to paint on the tiles and seal them with a finish. However, if you purchase tiles that already have a glossy finish, you may need to lightly sand them first to ensure the paint and finish adhere to the surface.

Ideas for Painting Your DIY Tiles
If you aren't sure what to paint on your DIY tiles, you may want to look up decorative tile designs for inspiration.
Some ideas include:
- Little flowers or florals
- A mosaic picture (each tile being a part of something bigger)
- Decorative swirls in the corners
- Stripes
- Names or initials
Really, you make these as detailed or as simple as you want. Either way, these custom tiles will definitely become a centerpiece of your indoor space.
