Netflix to Remove 'Between,' Its Early Original Series, on July 1

Netflix will be updating its streaming catalog throughout the month of June, but we now already have one report about a series exiting the platform in July, and it's one of the earliest Netflix originals.

Between, a Canadian sci-fi drama which premiered on Citytv on May 21, 2015, is set to depart Netflix on July 1, according to What's on Netflix's Kasey Moore.

The final day to watch the series on the service will be June 30.

What to know about Between?

Created by Michael McGowan, Between stars Jennette McCurdy in one of her final roles before she gave up acting. Jesse Carere, Justin Kelly, Ryan Allen, Jack Murray, Brooke Palsson, Samantha Munro and others all have prominent roles in the series, which is centered on a fictional town named Pretty Lake.

"After a mysterious disease kills every Pretty Lake resident over the age of 21, the survivors must fend for themselves amidst a government quarantine," reads the official Netflix description.

Between only ran for two seasons of six episodes apiece. Season 1 lasted from May 21-June 25, 2015, with Season 2 debuting on June 30, 2016 and finishing on August 4.

Overall, the show produced lackluster critical reviews and holds only a 22% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, along with a 47% rating on Metacritic. It is marked slightly higher on IMDb at 6/10.

Why is Between leaving Netflix now?

Despite only consisting of 12 episodes and owning nondescript ratings and approval, Between has been on Netflix for more than a decade.

Moore writes that the reason for its upcoming July 1 departure is likely contractual.

"Between was produced by Don Carmody Television, Mulmur Feed Co., and Elevation Pictures in association with Citytv and Netflix," Moore said. "Netflix's involvement gave them exclusive streaming rights outside of Canada (and eventually streaming rights within Canada, too).

"Typically, these co-production licensing agreements last for ten years following the release of the final season. Since Season 2 dropped on July 1st, 2016, the contract's 10-year clock has officially run out."
