Hit Netflix Show Faces Cancellation After Dwindling Viewing Figures
One of Netflix's biggest shows could be on the verge of cancellation in the near future, following a major drop in viewership upon its second season.
A Good Girl's Guide to Murder, the Emma Myers-led mystery series, premiered on the BBC in its home country of the UK, but has Netflix distribution internationally, with both companies co-producing the series. The show's second season, which landed on Netflix on May 27, received positive reviews from critics and is currently sitting at 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of the most acclaimed Netflix releases of the year.
Despite this, perhaps due to a lack of promotion by Netflix or a trend of popular shows failing to reach fans for Season 2 (see, for a recent example, Beef Season 2's viewership drop), audiences haven't been tuning in for the new episodes.
According to data accumulated by What's on Netflix, A Good Girl's Guide to Murder fell from 7.4 million views in its first week on Netflix for Season 1, to just 1.8 million views for the newly-released Season 2. That's a drop of around 80% on the platform, which could spell trouble for the show's future, with Netflix serving as co-producer for the thriller series.
With Meyers riding pre-existing popularity from Netflix's juggernaut series Wednesday, as well as a jump in Rotten Tomatoes score, going from 83% to 92% among critics and 68% to 95% for audiences, the adaptation of the popular book series by Holly Jackson should be performing a lot better than it currently is.
Perhaps, with shows like Beef and The Four Seasons also failing to bring viewers in for a second season despite a decent reception, the problem may be external rather than within the productions themselves. Lack of marketing, good word-of-mouth, or algorithm problems can all contribute to viewers failing to tune in once more, especially if they're unaware the show they loved is back for new episodes.
