Celebrating 47 Years of Donna Summer's No. 1 Hit 'Hot Stuff' and Its Impact

If your name is Donna Summer and you release a song called "Hot Stuff," it had better be memorable. Summer's lead single from her 1979 album Bad Girls was just that.

Released in April 1979, "Hot Stuff" climbed the Billboard Hot 100 all the way to No. 1 on this day 47 years ago, giving the "Queen of Disco" her second U.S. No. 1 hit after 1978's "MacArthur Park."

Bad Girls was a mega-success, and "Hot Stuff" set the tone

Not only did "Hot Stuff" hit No. 1 on June 2, 1979, where it stayed for a week before being replaced by the Bee Gees' "Love You Inside Out," but the song eventually delivered Summer the inaugural Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.

"Hot Stuff" reached No. 1 on the weekly charts in six different countries, and also finished at No. 7 on the year-end Billboard Hot 100 for 1979. When Billboard ranked its all time top 100 from 1958-2018, "Hot Stuff" came in at No. 87.

Overall, Bad Girls produced two No. 1 hits--"Hot Stuff" and "Bad Girls"--and another song ("Dim All the Lights" that went to No. 2. The album also spent six weeks atop the Billboard 200, including five consecutive weeks from July 7-August 4, 1979.

"Hot Stuff" is an all-time hit

Rolling Stone has consistently placed "Hot Stuff" on its updated lists of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, and in 2022, named "Hot Stuff" the 36th-best summer song ever.

"In 1973, LaDonna Andrea Gaines married Austrian actor Helmuth Sommer and repurposed his last name for her own stage name, assuring her inclusion on this list," Rolling Stone said. ""Hot Stuff" topped the chart in June 1979, a sex-craving disco anthem with grinding rock guitar courtesy Steely Dan/Doobie Brothers sideman Jeff "Skunk" Baxter."

Baxter's "grinding rock guitar" was a major reason why the "Queen of Disco" scored the aforementioned Grammy for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.
