Birds of prey may grow up to be fearless hunters, but these baby hawks clearly still have a few things to learn. TikToker Steven Sullivan (@rarebirdreport) shared an adorable video of three young hawks reacting like they've just seen a monster when a tiny butterfly suddenly appears near their nest, and the internet can't stop smiling.

Watch as the little hawks completely panic when the harmless butterfly flutters a bit too close for comfort. Their hilariously dramatic reactions have viewers everywhere laughing at the raptors, who may one day be fierce predators but are currently terrified of something smaller than a leaf.

Even the smallest creatures can give nature's fiercest hunters a surprise. When a butterfly flutters into a baby hawk's nest, the young chicks freeze in shock, unsure whether it's danger or just a harmless visitor. At this age, hawks are still learning the world - every sudden movement or unfamiliar shape sparks instinctive caution. The butterfly's wings might look delicate to us, but to the chicks, they're an unexpected mystery demanding their full attention. As commenter @Robbie shared, "Flabbergasted birds are so funny." We can't disagree with that!

Why Baby Birds Often React Dramatically to New or Unexpected Things

Commenter @Adam Durante pointed out, "Mind you, hawks have amazing eyesight. They can see that little critter in 8K ultra detail."

That may actually help explain why the baby hawks reacted so dramatically. According to the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher, hawks can see at least eight times better than humans and are capable of spotting prey as small as a mouse from up to a mile away.

Butterflies also move in quick, unpredictable ways, fluttering and darting around suddenly, which can easily startle young birds. Those abrupt movements may trigger a natural defensive response while the hawks try to determine whether the strange flying creature is dangerous.

And it's also important to remember these babies have probably never seen a butterfly before in their lives. As far as they know, that tiny fluttering thing could have been a predator, a threat, or something entirely unfamiliar, and their dramatic little reactions were basically them trying to decide whether it's a friend or foe.
