Rob Mac Shares How His Character from 'It's Always Sunny' Would React to His Fame

As the star of two truly beloved shows, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Welcome to Wrexham, Rob Mac has millions of huge fans. However, while speaking exclusively to Men's Journal, Mac explained that he thinks his character Mac would think he is a "douchebag" due to his Wrexham role. He also spoke about what fans can expect from the rest of the Welcome to Wrexham season 5 and what the show has taught him.

Why Rob Mac Never Saw ‘Welcome to Wrexham' as Just a Sports Show

Men's Journal: I have to ask you about Welcome to Wrexham. What can fans expect from the rest of the season?

Rob Mac: Heartbreak, triumph, tragedy, the vast scope of the human experience. That's what we've always been doing. That was the promise of the show. I never set out to make a football documentary, and I never set out to make a sports documentary. We wanted to tell a story, a love letter really, to the working class because we knew that that would transcend culture. Anybody could watch an episode of that show and could see themself reflected back at them.

Men's Journal: I'm not a big sports watcher, but I love the show because of the personal touches, especially how it captures the stories of people from the local area. I also enjoy that, unlike most of the great sports movies that I enjoy, I don't necessarily know that there's going to be that happy ending every time. I know that it could be bittersweet at the end. I think that element of the show is really, really interesting.

Rob Mac: One of the greatest compliments that we get from time to time is people saying, "I certainly didn't like football or soccer. I didn't even know I was a sports fan, but now I watch every game of Wrexham because I watched the documentary."

That was always my thesis. I just thought, "If you could fall in love with people, then you would fall in love with what they love. And if they love the Wrexham football team, you would follow the Wrexham football team." That's what has been happening all over the world.

Men's Journal: Has the show changed your relationship with the locals and the team, both as a fan and as a co-owner, because of seeing things from a different perspective?

Rob Mac: I make the show. So, I see it in the editing room. And that's always been a challenge because I want to present the truth. I have never been a part of a reality show or a documentary before. When I have seen them on TV in the past, I have usually been like, "Ah, what? Are they forgetting that the cameras are there? Are they forgetting that they're wearing a mic? This seems staged." The truth is, you do forget. It happens very quickly, and it's kind of scary how quickly you forget that you're wearing a mic and a camera is following you around. It just becomes a part of your life.

So, when I'm in the editing room, and I'm seeing a lot of like my reactions, I'm genuinely cringing or embarrassed or terrified because oftentimes I'm not putting my best self forward. I'm just putting my authentic self out there. And I want to cut it out of the show. At least subconsciously, I want to cut it out of the show. But I decided very early on that I couldn't do that because it would be untrue.

I wanted to make sure that we were presenting the truth. So, it has definitely changed not only my perspective of fandom, but even just how I approach things personally, because after seeing myself reflected back, there have been a couple of times where I realized, "You know, I could have handled that better. And you know what? It's not even someone remembering it. I'm watching it happen in real time. And I have to work on that aspect of my personality.

Rob Mac Reveals What Mac From ‘It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia' Would Think of Him Today

Men's Journal: As a huge It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia fan who has watched every episode, most of them multiple times, I have to ask. What do you think Mack would think if he met you and knew that you are the Wrexham co-owner and a TV star?

Rob Mac: Oh God, I think that he would think that I'm some Hollywood moron that he was going to take advantage of, and he'd go back to Frank and Charlie and figure out some sort of scam to become investors in the club. They might figure it out. Who knows? Depends on what episode you're watching.

Men's Journal: Now I want to watch that episode.
