62 Years Ago Today: Legendary Rock Band Scored Another No. 1 Hit in the US

May 30 is a significant day in the history of multiple industries.

It was on this day, 115 years ago, that the first Indianapolis 500 was held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. 40 years ago today, baseball legend Barry Bonds made his MLB debut for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

On May 30, 2003, Finding Nemo hit theaters in Canada and the United States. As for the music industry? On May 30, 1964, John Lennon and the Beatles saw one of their songs from Please Please Me reach No. 1 in the United States.

62 years ago today, "Love Me Do" by the Beatles reached the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100. The song replaced "My Guy" by Mary Wells, which had held the top spot for two consecutive weeks.

"Love Me Do" was the No. 1 song for one week before "Chapel of Love" by the Dixie Cups took over the top spot. Still, "Love Me Do" held a spot in the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 for three more weeks.

The Beatles Had 20 Songs Top the Billboard Hot 100

Unsurprisingly, no band had more No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 than the Beatles. 20 of their songs reached the top spot, beginning with "I Want to Hold Your Hand", which stayed at No. 1 for seven consecutive weeks, beginning on Feb. 1, 1964.

"She Loves You" was the Beatles' second song to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 (March 21, 1964), followed by "Can't Buy Me Love" (April 4, 1964). Finally, "Love Me Do" reached No. 1 on May 30.
