Neymar Injury Leaves World Cup Status in Doubt
The feel-good story of Neymar being called up to Brazil's 2026 World Cup squad may end before the tournament even begins. A calf injury left him out of Brazil's first training session, and he is set to undergo further tests and evaluation.
In recent years, calf injuries have become a major red flag in sports due to their association with Achilles tears. Teams have taken a much more conservative approach with calf strains, even though they may seem innocuous on the surface.
Spots on a national team squad are limited, especially in the biggest tournament in the world. Fans are already clamoring for Chelsea's João Pedro to take Neymar's place if he is not fit to play. Many considered Neymar's inclusion in the squad as more of a locker room presence rather than on-field contributor.
The 34-year-old Neymar's career has been one of great talent, but ultimately unrealized potential due to injury. When Messi and Ronaldo were at their peak dominating soccer, he was often considered to be at their level. He even finished third in Ballon d'Or voting to Messi and Ronaldo in 2015 and 2017. Unfortunately, he was never able to establish the consistency that made them all-time legends of the sport.
Brazil National Team coach Carlo Ancelotti has stated that Neymar's inclusion in the squad would be based on fitness and form, not reputation. Brazil's all-time leading goal scorer is in a tough position with pre-World Cup friendlies coming in a matter of days.
If Neymar cannot prove his fitness in time, it would be a heartbreaking, yet fitting, end to a career defined by what could have been. For a player who was once destined to be the face of this tournament on home soil back in 2014, bowing out before a ball is even kicked in 2026 would be a cruel final chapter.
